A student from Delta State College of Nursing Sciences in Agbor is in hot water after posting a TikTok video that has sparked a big debate online.
The video, which went viral this week, shows nursing students rejecting a song meant to praise Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, during her visit to Delta State on March 25. Instead of singing along to “Na our mama be this,” the students boldly replied, “Na your mama be this,” turning the moment into a public jab at the First Lady.
The incident happened at the Dome Event Centre in Asaba, where Senator Tinubu was distributing 10,000 professional kits—like scrubs and Crocs—to midwives as part of her Renewed Hope Initiative. The Master of Ceremony tried to get the crowd to cheer her as “everyone’s mother,” a common title for First Ladies in Nigeria. But the students’ cheeky response quickly spread across social media, with many calling it a sign of growing frustration with the government.
Now, the college has issued a warning to one student, Osato Edobor, accusing her of recording and sharing the “unofficial” song online. A letter from the school’s Provost, Evbodaghe Rita Ogonne, dated March 27, called it a “malicious act” and hinted at punishment. Reports say the student could even face expulsion, raising alarm among her supporters.
Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has jumped into the fight, praising the students for their courage. “These audacious nursing students should be celebrated, not punished,” Sowore said. “In this tough time under President Tinubu’s leadership, one of them is being targeted for sharing this bold song on TikTok. We will stand by her with all our strength—legal and physical—to stop this injustice.” Sowore and others argue that silencing the student is unfair and shows how the government reacts to criticism.
The viral video has split opinions online. Some Nigerians find it funny and say it reflects how young people feel about the country’s leaders. “The students spoke the truth—no one can force us to call her our mother,” one commenter wrote. Others think it’s disrespectful, with a user saying, “Nursing has rules. They should know better.”
As the story grows, many are watching to see if the college will back down or push ahead with punishing the student. For now, the “Na Your Mama Be This” song has become more than just a TikTok hit—it’s a symbol of defiance that’s hard to ignore.
