A nursing student from Delta State College of Nursing Sciences in Agbor can now breathe easy after a big win today. Nurse Osato Edobor was in trouble for sharing a TikTok video that mocked Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, with the song “Na Your Mama Be Dis.” But thanks to activist Omoyele Sowore, the Delta State government has changed its mind about punishing her.
The trouble started on March 25, when Senator Tinubu visited Delta State to give out kits to midwives. At the event in Asaba, students were supposed to cheer her as “our mama,” but some, including Edobor, sang back, “Na your mama be dis” instead.
The video went viral after Edobor posted it, and the college warned her of punishment, even hinting she could be expelled.
Sowore, a human rights fighter, stepped in fast. Today, his team, led by Chioma Ifemeludike, met with Edobor on her campus.
After that, Sowore called the Delta State Commissioner of Health. The Commissioner told him the state had canceled its earlier plan to discipline Edobor. “She doesn’t have to face any panel now,” Sowore shared, calling it a victory for free speech.
The news has people talking online. Some say Edobor was brave to speak out, while others think she crossed a line.
“Young people are tired of being told what to say,” one supporter wrote on X. But a critic said,
“Students should focus on learning, not mocking leaders.”
For Edobor, it’s a happy ending. “I’m so relieved,” she said. “I just want to finish my studies and help people as a nurse.”
Sowore added,
“This shows that when we stand together, we can stop injustice.” The state’s quick U-turn has left many wondering if more students will feel bold enou
gh to speak up.
