Former presidential aide, Laolu Akande, has publicly called for the criminal prosecution of the ex-Minister of State for Environment and Ecological Management, Olusola Awoniyi Nnaji, following allegations of certificate forgery.

Akande made his position clear during an interview on Channels Television's Sunrise Daily program on Thursday. His comments come in the wake of Nnaji's recent resignation from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet.

While acknowledging the swiftness of the minister's resignation which followed an investigative report by Premium Times Akande insisted that the matter should not end there.

"It’s good that the minister resigned," Akande stated, but stressed that resignation is "not enough." He believes that justice demands further action: "I think there has to be a pursuit of justice ultimately."

Nnaji, for his part, maintained that his resignation was not an admission of guilt but a gesture of respect for due process. However, Akande argues that given the conflicting accounts, a civil case may not suffice.

"The University of Nigeria, Nsukka said it did not issue him a certificate but he is insisting that the school did. So I don’t know whether it’s a civil case that can solve the matter," Akande noted. He concluded that, even in the interest of Nnaji himself, the matter must be taken to its "extreme" conclusion through a criminal prosecution to get to the truth.
