Former President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, has declared his recent appointment as Deputy Chairperson of the FIFA Men’s National Teams Competitions Committee a clear affirmation of Nigeria’s increasing stature in the global sports arena.
In an interview on Arise Television on Thursday, Pinnick conveyed his deep appreciation for the significant opportunity and what it represents for his nation. He underscored that this new high-profile position transcends a personal achievement, serving instead as a concrete reflection of Nigeria’s growing influence and relevance within FIFA.
Recognition for Nigeria on the Global Sports Stage. Pinnick emphasized the gravity of his new role, stating, “The importance of this is a recognition of Nigeria, as well as global sports. First, I’m saying that I’m humbled by the opportunity for me… the Committee for Competitions is the most important committee, because FIFA is all about competitions, organising competitions, which also includes the World Cup, the U-20 and the U-17, even up to the Club World Cup.”
He elaborated on the committee's crucial function, noting its central role in shaping the future of global football. This body is responsible for overseeing the meticulous organization and participation of all FIFA tournaments, making its leadership essential to the sport's worldwide structure.
Highlighting Africa’s Presence and Merit-Based Selection. Pinnick also drew attention to the strong African representation on the committee, pointing out the inclusion of other distinguished figures, notably South Africa’s Danny Jordaan.
Further stressing the integrity of the selection process, the former NFF boss affirmed FIFA’s commitment to a merit-based system. He highlighted that appointments are made strictly based on professionalism and integrity, ensuring that they are not swayed by regional or political considerations.
