Joleon Lescott

Former Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott has offered a candid warning to Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, suggesting the Gunners lack the firepower to secure the Premier League title with their current striking option.

Lescott's comments focus on Viktor Gyökeres, who joined Arsenal from Sporting CP during the summer transfer window. The Sweden international has registered three goals in ten appearances for Arteta's side to date.

"I would describe Victor Gyökeres as 'okay'," Lescott stated in an interview with Sky Bet. "If you are going to win the league, your striker can’t be okay; he has to be top."

In Lescott's view, this lack of a "top" center-forward means Arteta will be unable to guide Arsenal "over the line" to win the domestic league.

However, Lescott believes Arsenal's chances are brighter in the Champions League.

"In the Champions League, it’s different," he explained. He noted that the nature of the knockout competition, including the long gap before the later stages, means form and fitness are less predictable for all teams.

"With the way he [Arteta] rotates and because of that big gap, no one knows what kind of form or fitness teams will be in," Lescott commented. "That suits Arsenal better than having to be consistently good every single week to win the league."
